Be extra careful! That’s the message that the Douglas Forest Protective Association is sending to people working, living, or recreating in wildland areas as meteorologists are forecasting hot and dry weather to persist over southwest Oregon through at least the weekend. These conditions, combined with already dry forest fuels, could be a recipe for disaster in the event of a new wildfire.
“The weather forecast through the upcoming weekend is very similar to conditions that have been observed locally during the start of large wildfires in recent years” says DFPA Fire Prevention Specialist Kyle Reed. “With these hot and dry conditions, it only takes one spark to start a new wildfire, which is why it’s important for everyone to know and follow the Public Use Restrictions.”
Under DFPA’s Public Use Restriction with a fire danger rating of “EXTREME,” the mowing of dead or dry grass, the cutting, grinding, or welding of metal, the use of power saws for non-industrial purposes, and all other power-driven machinery used on private property for non-industrial improvements or developments is prohibited. Backyard debris burning, including the use of burn barrels, also remains prohibited. Additional restrictions remain in place on smoking, campfires, off road driving, electrical fence controllers, fireworks, exploding targets, tracer ammunition, and sky lanterns. Residents are reminded that additional fire restrictions or closures may be in place through private industrial landowners or public land management agency, on the lands they own or manage.
