Crews from the Douglas Forest Protective Association, Douglas County Fire District #2 and Winston – Dillard Fire Department responded to a reported fire burning in the median on Interstate 5, Tuesday evening, located about four miles southeast of Winston. Crews arrived on scene shortly after 7:00 PM and located two fires burning in the median near I-5 milepost 114. Strong winds fanned the flames, causing the fires to merge together and spread quickly to the south through the light, flashy fuels. Firefighters stopped the forward spread of the Milepost 114 Fire at approximately five acres, all of which was contained to the median.
Fire officials remind motorists passing through fire incidents to slow down, move over and focus on the road. Several motorists who passed by the Milepost 114 fire did so at high rates of speed while other drivers were seen with their cell phone out, presumably recording the incident as they passed by. These actions put motorists and first responders at risk during an already hazardous situation.
Firefighters remained on scene of the Milepost 114 fire for about three hours, mopping up hot spots and securing control lines. A preliminary fire investigation indicated that the cause of the fire was vehicle related.
