Crews from the Douglas Forest Protective Association and Sutherlin Fire Department responded to a natural cover fire Thursday afternoon located three miles northwest of Sutherlin near the intersection of Green Valley Road and Rochester Bridge Road. Firefighters arrived on scene of the Green Valley Fire around 2:50 PM and reported a half-acre fire that was burning in grass and brush that was spreading up a hillside. Two helicopters were dispatched to the fire and were used to drop buckets of water on the advancing flame front while engine crews and a bulldozer constructed containment lines around the blaze. By 3:30 PM, crews had the forward spread of the fire stopped at three and a half acres.
Firefighters remained on scene of the Green Valley Fire until 8:00 PM Thursday evening, mopping up hot spots and securing control lines. No homes were threatened by the Green Valley Fire and no injuries occurred. A preliminary fire investigation indicated that the cause of the Green Valley Fire may be power line related.
Additional personnel and equipment from the Fair Oaks Rural Fire Department and the Oakland Rural Fire Department assisted with the Green Valley Fire.
