Banks Creek Fire

Banks Creek Fire: 6-25-21

Crews form the Douglas Forest Protective Association, Fair Oaks Rural Fire Department, and Sutherlin Fire Department responded to a natural cover fire Friday afternoon located approximately six miles east of Sutherlin near Banks Creek Road. Crews arrived on scene of the Banks Creek incident around 4:30 PM and reported a slow-moving fire burning in grass and thick brush. Firefighters quickly contained the fire to 1/10th of an acre and remained on scene for about two hours, mopping up hot spots and securing control lines.

A preliminary fire investigation indicated that the Banks Creek Fire was a result of a smoldering burn pile that was ignited prior to fire season but was not properly extinguished. If not property extinguished, debris piles can smolder for weeks or even months before popping back to life during hot, windy conditions. Those who burned debris piles this winter or spring are encouraged to check the area where the burn took place to ensure that the pile is completely out.
