Wildfire preparedness starts at home—and it starts with neighbors working together.
We're proud to share that DFPA Community Wildfire Forester Lily Wheaton and Public Information Officer Rachael Pope recently had the opportunity to work with KLCC's Love Cross on an important segment called Oregon Ready, highlighting the value of defensible space and the power of the Firewise USA® program.
The article features Douglas County's Upper Olalla Firewise Community and recognizes the incredible leadership of Leonard Herzstein, whose dedication has helped bring neighbors together to reduce wildfire risk. His willingness to share his experience reminds us that wildfire preparedness isn't just about protecting one home—it's about protecting an entire community.
At DFPA, we know that weather and topography can't be controlled, but the fuels surrounding our homes can. Creating defensible space is one of the most effective actions property owners can take to improve their home's chances of surviving a wildfire.
A sincere thank you to Leonard for sharing his story, to the Upper Olalla Firewise Community for leading by example, and to KLCC for helping highlight the importance of prevention and community resilience. Together, we can build safer, more wildfire-ready communities.
