ELKTON CAMPFIRES POSE THREAT
July 31, 2007

Several campfires discovered along the banks of the Umpqua River in the Elkton area are cause for concern by the Douglas Forest Protective Association.

“Fire danger is climbing every day,” says DFPA District Manager Melvin Thornton.  “The last thing we need right now is for a careless act to cause serious harm to our communities and natural resources.”

According to the Keep Oregon Green Association, 681 campfires built on state and private lands burned 11,253 acres and cost taxpayers $1,710,370 to suppress in the last five years. Abandoning camp and warming fires is the fourth-leading human behavior that causes wildfires in Oregon.

Open fires, including campfires, bon fires, debris burn piles and incinerators, are prohibited under DFPA’s Regulated Use Closure.  Fire Wardens are increasing patrols and will cite anyone in violation of this closure up to $499.  The responsible party will also be liable for any fire suppression costs and damages, which can run into the thousands of dollars and higher.

Campfires are allowed in designated campgrounds that have been approved by DFPA for fire safety. Approved campgrounds include Cavitt Creek, Eagle View, Lone Pine, Millpond, Rock Creek, Scaredman, Susan Creek, Tyee, Amacher Park, Douglas County Fairgrounds, Pass Creek, Stanton Park and Whistler's Bend.
