FIRE SEASON REQUIREMENTS

* Supply hand tools for each operation site, 1 tool per person, minimum of 4 tools on site. Even mix of Pulaskis, axes, shovels, hazel hoes.

* Store all hand tools for fire in a sturdy box clearly identified as containing firefighting tools. Supply at least one box for each landing or each powered machine.

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS (477.655, 629-43-0025)

* Each internal combustion engine used in an operation except power saws shall be equipped with one chemical fire extinguisher rated as not less than 2 and 1/2 pound ABC.

PUMP, HOSE, AND WATER SUPPLY (477.650, 477.625, 629-043-0026, 629-43-0020)

* Supply a pump, hose and water supply for equipment used on an operation for more than 2 days.

* Pump must be maintained ready to operate and capable to provide a discharge of not less than 20 gallons per minute when pumping through 50' of hose equipped with a nozzle 1/4" in diameter at pump level.

* Water supply shall be minimum of 300 gallons if a self-propelled engine.

* Water supply shall be minimum of 500 gallons if not self-propelled (pond, stream, tank, sump, etc.)

* Provide at least 500' of hose not less than 3/4" inside diameter

* Water supply, pump, and at least 250' of hose and nozzle shall be maintained as a connected, operating unit ready for immediate use.

SPARK ARRESTERS AND MUFFLERS (477.645, 629-043-0015)

* Equip internal combustion engines with approved spark arresters.

* The following are exempt from the spark arrester requirement:

1.Full turbo-charged internal combustion engines maintained in good condition.

2. Engines in motor vehicles operating on public roads equipped with adequate muffler with baffles kept in good repair.

3. Engines on fire equipment, and which are used solely for pumping water.

4. Chainsaws

5. All gasoline engines of less than 50 cubic inch displacement must be equipped with factory-installed mufflers.

6. All non-turbo charged engines must be equipped with an approved spark arrester.

7. Heavy trucks must be equipped with a baffled muffler and exhaust system in good repair. The exhaust must extend above the cab and discharge upward or to the rear, or to the end of the truck frame.

8. Light trucks must be equipped with a muffler and exhaust system.

FIRE TOOLS, EXTINGUISHER FOR TRUCKS (477.655, 629-043-0025)

* Equip each truck driven in forest areas for industrial purposes with:

-1 round pointed shovel at least 10 inches wide, with a handle at least 26 inches long.

-1 axe or Pulaski with 26" handle or larger.

-1 fire extinguisher rated not less than 2 and 1/2 pound ABC.

CABLE LOGGING OPERATIONS (477.625, 477.655, 629-043-0026, 629-043-0025)

* Clear the ground of flammable debris within a 10-foot radius around any block.

* This cleared area shall be kept free of flammable debris while the block is in use.

* Provide at each block on the yarding road:

-5 gallon pump can filled with water

-1 round pointed shovel at least 10 inches wide with a handle at least 26 inches long.

* Avoid line-rub on rock or woody material, which may result in sparks or sufficient heat to cause ignition of a fire.

POWER SAWS (477.640, 629-043-0036)

* Each power saw must be equipped with an exhaust system which retains at least 90% of carbon particles over .023" in diameter. A standard exhaust screen with .023" holes meets this requirement.

* Power saws on industrial operations must meet Spark Arrester Guide specifications.

* The following shall be immediately available for prevention and suppression of fire:

-A fire extinguisher of at least 8 oz. capacity.

-1 round pointed shovel at least 10 inches wide with a handle at least 26 inches long.

* The power saw must be moved at least 20' from the place of fueling before it is started.

SNAGS ON OPERATION AREAS (477.565, 629-043-0005)

* Fell all dead trees and snags which are a fire hazard as directed by the forester.

FIRE WATCH (477.665, 629-043-0030)

* Each operation side is to have a watchman.

* Watchman shall be on duty after the power-driven equipment used by the operator has been shut down for the day or that period of time designated by the forester.  IFPL I - ONE HOUR; IFPL II -TWO HOURS; IFPL III - THREE HOURS.

* Watchman shall:

-Be physically capable and experienced to operate firefighting equipment.

-Have facilities for transportation and communications to summon assistance.

-Observe all portions of the operation on which activity occurred during the day.

-Immediately proceed to control and extinguish the fire and summons assistance.

NO SMOKING (477.510)

* No smoking while working or traveling in an operation area.
